Manx NFU welcomes new members

The Manx NFU has welcomed the results of the Isle of Man general election 2006, and looks forward to working with all members of the new House of Keys.

Howard Quayle, president of the Manx National Farmers' Union said: "I'd like to congratulate all new members of the Keys and those who've been re-elected, and say that the Manx NFU is looking forward to working closely with them to secure the future of Manx agriculture."

The next five years present an enormous challenge for the Isle of Man. Before the next election the seeds will have been sown for the future of Manx farming. Strong leadership will be essential if we are to retain our beautiful family farmed Island.

With the potential introduction of the free market in red meat in January 2011, and the changes in farm support proposed for 2009, the industry cannot avoid change.

Howard Quayle, said: "Each farmer will have to look closely at their business to ensure they are producing what the market wants. Each Manx citizen must also decide whether or not they will choose to support Manx producers by buying Manx food, in order to ensure food security and a beautiful environment in years to come."

Howard Quayle also welcomed the re-election of DAFF Minister Phil Gawne: "The Manx NFU doesn't always see eye to eye with the DAFF Minister, but our working relationship is open, honest and constructive. A close relationship is crucial to leading the industry through the changes we face. Now that Phil Gawne has been re-elected I hope he will continue as DAFF Minister in order that the work we have started over the last year can continue.

"In order to face change Manx farmers need to believe the future can be brighter. This will mean winning the support of Tynwald members for meat plant subvention in order to bring down the charges to farmers and the costs to the consumer. We must also work closely to bring in new money in this year's budget. New support and understanding from Treasury for farmers who are struggling badly to cope in a world where farm costs go up each year but supermarket prices go down will help show the agricultural community that there is light at the end of the tunnel."

The Manx NFU will be contacting all members of the new House of Keys to congratulate them personally on their success.
