- 26th March 2007:
x EU will pay more for animal welfare branded food New EU research evidence has supported the Manx NFU's desire to develop a Manx animal welfare brand to compete in the UK market. According to this new research, published on the 22nd March 2007, EU consumers are willing to make an extra effort to buy animal welfare friendly products, even if this means changing where they shop or paying more for goods. The euro-polling organisation, Eurobarometer, has carried out a major study into attitudes to animal welfare. The report shows that while citizens feel they lack the necessary information to distinguish between products on animal welfare grounds, 62% would change their shopping habits in order to access more animal welfare friendly goods. The survey also revealed that citizens do not feel that they are provided with this option at the moment, due to insufficient information on animal welfare in food production. A large majority of people backed the idea of labelling or logos to indicate high animal welfare standards. The survey demonstrates general support for financially rewarding farmers who use better animal welfare practices. "This survey shows that the Manx NFU has been absolutely right to highlight Manx farming's excellent animal welfare practices when developing new markets across the Irish Sea," said Howard Quayle, president of the Manx NFU. ffinlo Costain, general secretary of the Manx NFU, who has also been promoting this brand idea said, "The EU research shows that we are developing the compassion brand at exactly the right time. We must push ahead to take advantage of our natural excellence in animal welfare to move into this emerging market. It would be a real shame to see this opportunity eaten up by a less deserving farming community." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EU information at: http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/07/398&type=HTML&aged=0&language=EN&guiLanguage=en Full data at: http://ec.europa.eu/food/animal/welfare/survey/sp_barometer_aw_en.pdf |
