Foot and Mouth Update

The Union welcomes the advice from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry available at its website
http://www.gov.im/daff/footandmouth.xml

DAFF information for hauliers and farmers is below:

The UK has stopped all livestock movements pending the completion of a
tracing exercise involving a farm near Guildford, Surrey.
Such action is not deemed necessary at this time in the Island as only movements of a few sheep have occurred recently onto the Island. However the only movement that the Department believes to be prudent is that for slaughter and killing at both the New and the Cull Yard.

Hauliers should :-

  • Only collect stock from a farm and not offload any stock except at the place of slaughter.
  • Get the farmer to load the stock - hauliers should reduce their contact with the farm to an absolute minimum.
  • Wear waterproof outer leggings and boots disinfecting on each farm before getting back into the cab.

Farmers should :-

  •  Make sure your boundaries are secure as straying animals could carry infection to and from your farm.
  • UNIDENTIFIABLE STRAYS WILL BE DESTROYED.
  • maintain the highest standards of hygiene involving movements on and off farms;
  • limit vehicle movements and visits on farm to a minimum e.g. ask all deliveries to be offloaded at the farm gate;
  • limit the places on the farm where people can visit and only allow essential personnel to visit stock;
  • limit contact with other livestock and wash and disinfect when returning to their own livestock.
